MM-VLBI with ALMA
This memo reviews the requirements for using the ALMA array as a part of a global VLBI array at millimeter wavelengths. ALMA can be outfitted for VLBI at modest cost and should be planned with this capability in mind, as it may be more difficult to retrofit at a later date. The essential features required in the ALMA design are discussed.
متن کاملA census of the Wolf-Rayet content in Westerlund 1 from near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy
New NTT/SOFI imaging and spectroscopy of the Wolf-Rayet population in Westerlund 1 are presented. Narrow-band near-IR imaging together with follow up spectroscopy reveals four new Wolf-Rayet stars, of which three were independently identified recently by Groh et al., bringing the confirmed Wolf-Rayet content to 24 (23 excluding source S) – representing 8% of the known Galactic Wolf-Rayet popula...
متن کاملALMA Continuum Spectrum of the M87 Nucleus
We report the preliminary result of ALMA continuum observations toward the M87 nucleus at thirtysix frequencies (quasi-simultaneously) ranging from 90 GHz to 700 GHz. We detected the nuclear component at almost all the frequency points. We found a spectral break at the millimeter regime: a nearly flat spectrum at lower frequencies and a steep spectrum at higher frequencies. The spectral profile...

Context. Dusty star-forming galaxies are among the most prodigious systems at high redshift (z > 1), characterized by high starformation rates and huge dust reservoirs. The bright end of this population has been well characterized in recent years, but considerable uncertainties remain for fainter dusty star-forming galaxies, which are responsible for the bulk of star formation at high redshift ...
متن کاملThe promise of interferometry in the mm range: ALMA
The Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA), a world-wide project (64x12m-dishes operating from 84 to 720GHz, to be completed by 2011) will represent a jump of almost two orders of magnitude in sensitivity and angular resolution as compared to present millimeter/submillimeter interferometers, and will thus undoubtedly produce a major step in astrophysics. The main objectives will be the origins o...
